Sunset Shells Crochet Top

crochet top - hanging

I’m thrilled to share this free pattern for an easy, breezy summer top – the Sunset Shells Crochet Top! This crochet top is made using a #3 cotton yarn, so it is lightweight and perfect for warmer weather. The yoke is crocheted in the round, and the front and back panels are worked in rows. Seam up each side and this top is ready to roll!

To make it, I used Bernat Softee Baby Cotton in the color Soft Plum. This yarn is so easy to work with and this soft color looks beautiful worked up in a simple shell stitch.

  1. I love this top and I’m going to make it for myself, it’s really lovely and perfect for Spring or Summer. Thanks so much for sharing the pattern! 😃

    1. I would try using a 6.0 mm crochet hook (instead of 5.00 mm) and see where that gets you. Unfortunately, it will be a bit of a trial and error. Good luck with it!

  2. Please advise if these sizes, s,m,l and xl are for children or adults! I love this pattern and if for children I want to make if for my granddaughter as part of her birthday gift which is coming up soon. She wears a 5/6 girls. I need to know if these are children’s sizes , and if so whether a medium equates to size 5/6. Please advise ASAP. Thank you!

    1. They are adult sizes. You might try using a smaller yarn and/or hook size. I don’t know if it would be small enough to fit a child though. Sorry about that!

  3. I am working on the sunset shells crochet top. As I’m repeating rows 11 and 12 over and over, instead if of widening it is getting narrower. I can’t figure out where I am going wrong. Any tips? I’m relatively new to crochet and this is my first top. I believe I am getting the stitches right, but something is wrong. Help!

    1. Sue – I have studied your question and I can’t figure out why yours would be getting narrower. I’m so sorry!

    2. Sue,
Try putting a piece of different colored yarn or a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of the first row. I am pretty sure that you are not working into the turning chains, which means you are missing a stitch on each row. Counting every stitch for each row is a good habit to get into. Move the stitch marker to each new row as you work. I have found that making the first stitch of each row just a bit looser makes it easier to see when you come back to it. Hope this helps.
