Nautical Filet Crochet Blanket

nautical filet crochet blanket - hanging

Today I’m sharing a free pattern for the Nautical Filet Crochet Blanket! I have been on a roll lately with nautical themed crochet projects. You can check out my Farmhouse Nautical Pillows here and here.

However, this is the very first filet crochet project that I am sharing on the blog! Filet crochet uses only two stitches – chains and double crochet – to create a grid like lace which depicts graphics. This blanket depicts three anchors at the bottom of the blanket and three anchors at the top of the blanket. The middle portion of the blanket is worked in a basic shell pattern.

Most filet crochet patterns are written as charts, but to make this project beginner friendly, I have written out the instructions row by row! If you have never done filet crochet before, this blanket is a great introduction because it only uses the technique for a few rows on each end of the blanket. If you can work a double crochet, then you can filet crochet!

I used one of my go-to yarns for this project – Caron Simply Soft. I love this yarn for its softness and the wide range of colors that it is available in. However, any #4 worsted weight yarn will work for this project. If you would like to make a Nautical Filet Crochet Blanket of your own, read on!

  1. This pattern looks awesome and I would like to try it! I’m not a fan of that Caron yarn, as I found it too soft ( if that is possible) and just not great quality! I find that true of many acrylic yarns! I would like to try a small sample size of at least the middle portion of this blanket! Would you be able to tell me the multiples so I could do just that?
    Thank you so much!

    1. Certainly! For the middle section (the shell pattern) just chain a multiple of 3 + 2. And any worsted weight yarn should work out fine, and other weight yarns would also be fine, your blanket will just be a different size than mine. If you decide to make it I’d love to see a photo!

  2. Question… Is row 63 a typo? It’s a repeat of row 62, but looking at the photos I don’t see that row.
    Loving the pattern, thank you!

    1. There is a typo in row 63 (now corrected) where I mistakenly typed “ext” instead of “next” (lol). However, row 63 is not a repeat of row 62. Both rows start out with ch 2 and dc in each of the 1st 20 dc, but then the instructions vary. I am so glad you are loving it! This is one of my very favorite blankets.
