Dragonfly Crochet Pillow

Dragonfly Crochet Pillow - free pattern

I have another great pillow design to share with you today – the Dragonfly Crochet Pillow! Normally, I would work a graphic pillow using single crochet stitches, but here, I have used a modified version of the bean stitch to give this dragonfly pillow some unique texture and appeal. If you are like me and love the bean stitch, you may want to check out my previous post, where I share a cardigan pattern featuring the traditional bean stitch in the body and trim.

Because I crocheted this pillow using a super bulky yarn, I modified the traditional bean stitch in this design by omitting one of the yarn overs, resulting in fewer loops on the hook when you pull through. I did this for the simple reason that when working with a super bulky yarn, the greater the number of loops to pull through on the hook, the more of a struggle it can be. This modification simplifies the process a lot and makes this pillow a breeze to work up.

Materials Used:
Abbreviations:

ch(s) = chain(s)
FSC = foundation single crochet – see explanation below
MBS = modified bean stitch – see explanation below
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)
RS = right side
WS = wrong side
American crochet terms used throughout

Special Stitches Used:
Foundation Single Crochet (FSC)
Step One:

Make a slip knot and ch 2. Insert hook in the first chain, yarn over and pull up a loop. There are 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the first loop. (You have just made a chain). There are 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. (You have just made the first foundation single crochet stitch.)

Step Two:

Insert hook into the chain made in step one and pull up a loop. There are 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the first loop. There are 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. (You have just made the second foundation single crochet stitch).

Repeat step two until you have achieved the desired number of foundation single crochet stitches.

Modified Bean Stitch (MBS):

Insert hook in next st, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over in same st and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1 to complete the stitch.

Gauge:

4″ x 4″ = 5 MBS, 8 rows

Finished Size Approximately:

12″ x 12″ (panels may be slightly smaller, but will stretch to achieve a snug fit once the pillow form is inserted)

Important Note:

Traditionally, color changes are made on the last step of the preceding stitch. If I had worked this pattern the traditional way, I would have changed colors on the “ch 1 to complete the stitch” step of the preceding modified bean stitch. However, please be aware that in this pattern I changed colors on the “pull through all 4 loops on hook” step of the preceding modified bean stitch. Although this is a non-traditional approach to color changes (and quite frankly, takes a little getting used to), it makes the dragonfly graphic turn out much prettier in my opinion!
